Owner-Trained Medical Alert Dogs
What is a medical alert dog?
Every person is different, which means every partnership is different too.
What is a medical alert dog?
Medical alert dogs can be trained to recognise and respond to changes associated with certain medical conditions. Depending on the individual, the dog and the condition, this may include learning to alert their owner to a change or carrying out a helpful behaviour when an episode occurs.
Every person is different, which means every partnership is different too.
That’s why our training is individually tailored. We’ll start by talking about what you need from your dog, what would make a meaningful difference to your everyday life and whether those goals are realistic for you and your dog.
Training your own dog
You don’t necessarily need a specially selected puppy or a dog that has already been professionally trained to begin exploring assistance-dog work.
Some people choose to train a dog they already share their life with, while others come to us before choosing a puppy or dog so we can help them think about the qualities that may be important.
Not every dog will enjoy or be suited to medical alert or assistance work, and that’s absolutely fine. Your dog’s welfare will always be an important part of the process.
We’ll consider their temperament, confidence, health, ability to cope in different environments and, most importantly, whether they are happy doing the work being asked of them.
Your dog. Your journey. Our support.
